About The Faculty

After the publication of the Higher Education Law Nr. 2547, our faculty started its educational activities in Elazig, which is the beautiful city of the east, in the 1983-1984 academic year according to the subparagraph (a) of Article 31 of the Decree Law Nr. 41 on the organization of higher education institutions.

The new dean's office building of Fırat University Faculty of Medicine was completed on 18.05.2000 and the additional education building was completed on 26.12.2011 and they were put into service afterwards. In addition to the management and departments units, there are a conference hall for 400 people, 7 lecture halls, 3 multidisciplinary laboratories and a library/reading hall within the total gross general usage area of ​​our faculty of 21,430 m².

In our faculty, an integrated system has been adopted in medical education since the 2002-2003 academic year. Our nearly five thousand general practitioners specialist physicians who have graduated from our faculty until today continue to serve humanity both in our country and in many other countries by joining our health force.

Our practical/internship/applied trainings are carried out at Firat University Hospital. Firat University Hospital is a health institution with a closed area of ​​160,000 m², a bed capacity of 1100 and serving approximately one million outpatient clinic patients annually.

In addition to the faculty of medicine building, the construction of a sports complex consisting of an astroturf, basketball, volleyball court and tennis court has been completed. The landscaping works of the faculty of medicine and Fırat University Hospital are continuing to be renewed. In the 2024-2025 academic year, our faculty continues its education with nearly 200 faculty members, 520 research assistants and 1529 students.

 Since the establishment of our faculty; Prof. Dr. Oktay ÖZKARAKAş, Prof. Dr. Gürsel ORTUĞ, Prof. Dr. Süleyman Sırrı KILIÇ, Prof. Dr. Özge ARDIÇOĞLU, Prof. Dr. Ömer Lütfi ERHAN, Prof. Dr. İrfan ORHAN, Prof. Dr. Murad ATMACA, Prof. Dr. Ahmet KAZEZ have served the principal post as the dean. Currently, this task is carried out by Prof. Dr. Metin Kaya GÜRGÖZE.
